What's on the guitar
Stephen Carpenter's Deftones rig has been remarkably consistent since 2010:
- Guitars: ESP LTD STEF-B8 (primary 8-string). 27.5-inch scale. ESP STEF Custom 8-string for studio work.
- Strings: Ernie Ball Paradigm 8-string sets, coated nickel-plated steel.
- Tuning: 8-string Drop E / Drop D# / Drop D by song.
- Pickups: Fishman Fluence Stephen Carpenter signature, active, voice-switchable humbuckers.
- Amps: Fortin Amplification Natas / Meshuggah modified Marshall, Fractal Audio Axe-Fx III.
Carpenter brought 8-string into Deftones on 2010's Diamond Eyes, a decision that reshaped the band's sound around extended-range rhythm work. Every Deftones studio record since (Koi No Yokan 2012, Gore 2016, Ohms 2020) has been 8-string-dominant. Deftones' post-2010 catalog is one of the most commercially successful 8-string-heavy catalogs in mainstream alt-metal.
Endorsed vs. verified use
Carpenter is a documented Ernie Ball artist. Paradigm string line use is directly verified through Ernie Ball's artist marketing and Deftones rig-rundown coverage. ESP ships his signature STEF-B8 factory-strung with Ernie Ball. This is one of the more clearly documented 8-string player string-brand relationships.
Why Paradigm for a touring 8-string
Paradigm's coated NPS wrap solves the tone-life problem that plagues uncoated 8-string low strings. On an uncoated set, the low F# (or, in Carpenter's case, the low E or D) loses upper-midrange content within 2–3 days of heavy playing, the string starts sounding like a rumble instead of a note. For a band like Deftones, whose touring cycles span multiple weeks of nightly performances, string changes have to happen less frequently than the tone-degradation curve would otherwise dictate.
Paradigm's coating buys Carpenter roughly 3–5x the tone life of an uncoated equivalent. The trade-off is slightly lower upper-midrange output than uncoated NPS or Cobalt would give at the same gauge, acceptable for his application because Deftones' mix aesthetic emphasizes midrange body and low-end weight more than the aggressive upper-mid attack that djent-lane bands like Periphery prioritize.
On Deftones' 8-string voicing
Deftones' 8-string sound sits adjacent to but distinct from djent. Where Periphery or Animals as Leaders build compositions around the low string's articulation at speed, Deftones often uses the 8-string for heavy, slow, open-string chugs with significant sustain. That application benefits from heavier low-string gauges (.080+ for Drop E territory) and string sets that survive the mechanical stress of the heavy-detuned playing style.
The ESP LTD STEF-B8's 27.5-inch scale length is slightly longer than the 27-inch production 8-string standard, enough to give Carpenter's sub-F# tunings meaningful tension without requiring extreme custom gauges.

Why this one: Note: Carpenter's actual string is Ernie Ball Paradigm, not Cobalt. This Cobalt 8-string set is shown because it's the most widely stocked 8-string product; if you want to match Carpenter's rig specifically, search Ernie Ball Paradigm 8-string. For Drop E on 27-inch scale, swap the 8th string for an .080 or .084.
