Dream Theater formed as Majesty in 1985, when John Petrucci, John Myung, and Mike Portnoy started a band while attending Berklee College of Music in Boston. A Las Vegas act already using the name Majesty threatened legal action; Portnoy's father suggested Dream Theater, after a small theater in Monterey, California, and it stuck. Four decades later they're progressive metal's defining act, 12+ million records sold worldwide, and a 2022 Grammy win for "The Alien." The current lineup is Petrucci (guitar), Myung (bass), Portnoy (drums, who returned in October 2023 after Mike Mangini's 2010 to 2023 tenure), James LaBrie (vocals, since 1991), and Jordan Rudess (keyboards, since 1999). This page is the gear encyclopedia: strings and instrument citations, not a full band history.

On Quarantième: Live à Paris, the November 2025 live album capturing the band's 40th anniversary tour with the classic lineup reunited.

From the moment we announced our 40th anniversary tour, we knew it would be a very special event for both the band and our fans and must be captured.

John Petrucci

Guitarist, Dream Theater

John Petrucci, guitar

Petrucci's rhythm and lead tone rides on a two-decade Ernie Ball relationship and his own Music Man signature line. His full rig, including amps and pickups, is broken down on his profile.

Strings · Beta tester

Ernie Ball Regular Slinky Cobalt (.010-.046)

His 6-string set on the Music Man Majesty. Petrucci beta-tested the Cobalt line before its January 2012 launch and appears in Ernie Ball's launch campaign. Custom 7-string Cobalt sets cover the Majesty 7.

Music Man Majesty 6 & Majesty 7

Neck-through mahogany build with DiMarzio Dreamcatcher and Rainmaker pickups. The Majesty 7 is the seven-string variant for Dream Theater's lower-tuned material. Petrucci's Music Man relationship dates back to the original JP6 in 2001.

John Myung, bass

Myung's counter-melodic, technically dense bass parts have anchored Dream Theater's catalog since 1985. His full profile, including his 6-string work, is here.

Ernie Ball Slinky Cobalt 6-String Electric Bass Strings (.032-.130)

Music Man's own specifications table lists this as the factory-strung spec on Myung's signature Bongo 6 HH. The .130 low-B holds pitch under Myung's fast, unison passages with Petrucci's rhythm guitar.

Bass · Signature, 4- and 6-string

Music Man John Myung Bongo 6 HH & John Myung 4

The 6-string Bongo 6 HH is his main instrument. He also plays the 4-string John Myung 4, which he returned to for the Images and Words material, citing the wider string spacing of a 4-string neck. Earlier-era signature basses were with Yamaha's RBX-JM line.

Mike Portnoy, drums (2023 to present)

Portnoy co-founded the band in 1985 and anchored it through 2010, then returned in October 2023. His full rig and drumming-style breakdown is here.

Tama Starclassic + Sabian Mike Portnoy Signature line

Long-documented Tama artist; touring kits run 36+ pieces with acoustic toms and electronic trigger pads layered together. The Sabian signature cymbal range (hi-hats, crashes, rides, splashes, chinas) was developed with Portnoy across the 2000s and 2010s.

Mike Mangini, drums (2010 to 2023)

Between Portnoy's two stints, Mike Mangini drummed for Dream Theater, winning a public audition documented in the band's own Spirit Carries On video series and recording A Dramatic Turn of Events (2011) through A View from the Top of the World (2021). His signature gear from that era, a Pearl kit, Zildjian cymbals, and a Vater "Wicked Piston" signature stick, is documented on his own profile. He's not a current member: Portnoy's October 2023 return ended his tenure, and Mangini has since worked as a session player, a Berklee College of Music professor, and, since June 2026, Godsmack's touring drummer.

Vocals and keys

James LaBrie (vocals) joined in January 1991 after the band heard his demo tape and flew him from Canada to New York to audition; he's held the mic through every record since Images and Words (1992). Jordan Rudess (keyboards) joined in 1999, replacing Derek Sherinian, after Petrucci and Portnoy played alongside him in the side project Liquid Tension Experiment and invited him to join full-time. Rudess played the first-ever commercially recorded harpejji track on the 2010 God of War III tie-in single "Raw Dog." Neither role has a documented strings or fretted-instrument angle, so CYS doesn't carry a dedicated profile for either; this section exists so the lineup on this page stays complete and accurate.

Sixteen albums, one reunited lineup

Images and Words (1992) is the commercial breakthrough, built around the radio hit "Pull Me Under." Metropolis Pt. 2: Scenes from a Memory (1999) is widely regarded as the band's magnum opus. Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence (2002) holds their longest song, a 42-minute title track. A View from the Top of the World (2021), Mangini's last record with the band, won Dream Theater's first Grammy. Parasomnia (2025) is the most recent: the first studio album with Portnoy back on drums since 2009, and the band's sixteenth overall. CYS doesn't yet carry individual album pages for this catalog; the gear context above covers the current, touring lineup.

Why this one: John Petrucci's 6-string set on the Music Man Majesty. The Cobalt wrap adds output and upper-mid clarity to a standard .010 gauge, the reason his rhythm tone cuts through dense prog arrangements without going heavier.
