Across 14 of the band's studio albums (Piece of Mind, 1983, through Senjutsu, 2021) and extensive touring catalog, his drumming + the Iron Maiden gallop have defined what 1980s-2020s heavy metal sounds like.

Before Iron Maiden he played in Trust (1980-1982, the French hard-rock band that toured with Iron Maiden in 1981) and Streetwalkers (1970s).

Iron Maiden's 2024 announcement was that McBrain would step back from full-time touring after stroke-related health issues affected his playing capacity; Simon Dawson has taken over as the band's touring drummer.
